The photo above was taken in the café of the "Verenigingsgebouw", which has recently been restored and now houses a café next to a hotel. Over the years, many catering establishments have disappeared and others have taken their place. An overview of the last 20 years is not very useful, but it is nice to look a little further back at the historic hospitality in Hengelo! The map is from 1967.

Which cafe do you miss the most? Then for me that is café de Ster by Bertus Hemmelder. When I was still at the Bataafse Kamp, I skipped school for many hours to be able to play a game of billiards with a classmate. At 10 o'clock in the morning you were the first to reach the billiards.

In Belgium they call these "chat cafes" and in Germany there are still many authentic cafes where people come for a nice glass of beer and a good conversation. And preferably with a decor that has not changed for 50 years. In Enschede I still like to visit the Bolwerk, but unfortunately "Hengelo's Living Room" is no longer.....
